Frequently asked questions

What is a reverse total shoulder replacement?

In a reverse shoulder replacement the normal ball-and-socket arrangement is reversed: a metal ball is fixed to the shoulder blade and a plastic-lined socket is fixed to the top of the arm bone. This lets the deltoid muscle lift the arm when the rotator cuff is no longer working. It is usually recommended when the rotator cuff is torn or not working, including rotator cuff arthropathy, massive irreparable rotator cuff tears and some complex fractures in older patients. See Shoulder replacement.

How can I better prepare for surgery?

Most shoulder operations are planned weeks ahead, which gives you time to prepare: eat well with plenty of protein, stop smoking and vaping, keep diabetes well controlled, and plan for life in a sling. Tell the rooms early if you take blood thinners, diabetes medicines, Ozempic or similar, or arthritis medicines. See Preparing for surgery.

Where will my surgery be performed?

Dr Constantin operates at the Mater Hospital, North Sydney, for patients with private health insurance, workers compensation and CTP claims, and at Canterbury Hospital for Medicare-only patients. Workers compensation surgery can be performed at either the Mater or Canterbury. See Health insurance & fees.
